Oral Proficiency Skills in English

Oral Prificiency Skills in English (OPS-English) is a new programme introduced by the Education Ministry of Malaysia to improve the oral skills of the students.

I was selected to be the lead trainer for my district. So I went for the briefing and I had more than enough explanation on the importance of the programme.

When I came back, I held an in-house training for the other English teachers in my district and I explained to them about the programme. Overall, most of the teacher gave positive feedback regarding the programme and their only concern was would the students be able to participate.

After few weeks, most of them claimed that the programme was so beneficial to their students and they could see that the students now enjoyed English lessons. I was so happy that I was a part of the programme.

As a lead trainer myself, of course I have to walk the talk. And I did implement the programme with my students, As expected, I could clearly see most of my students benefited from the programme.

These are some of the examples taken from the module of the programme. The objective of the programme was to get the students to talk about anything related to the pictures.

Lesson Plan - Unit 6 (Safe and Sound)

This is just an example of one of my lessons.
The students were form 1 students, and they were weak students. However, with guidance from peers and teacher, most of the students were able to perform the task.

OPS English Form 1 - Reuse Reduce and Recycle

I would like to share some pictures of one of the activities I had with my students. I honestly believe that the students' motivation and interest towards a certain subject is very much depending on the approaches taken by the teachers.

I am not saying that I am the best teacher out there. I still need to improve a lot on my methods. But I am at least trying my best to give the best to my kids.

For this chapter, the students learn about the 3R, which stands for reuse, reduce and recycle. They learn how to differentiate between the three things, and its advantages/benefits.

They also learn about what they can do as students to make earth a better place to live in. For this specific task, I asked the students to go home and find recyclable items only. They will then build a product which they can use daily from these recyclable items that they found.

The reason why I wanted to have this kind of activity is because I want the students to be more appreciative towards the environment. I want them to understand how important the environment is to us, humans. I also want them to start looking after it and do what they can to salvage what is left of our environment.

In addition, I want them to practice using English. When the students have came up with their own products, I called all the students one by one, and they were required to describe the steps in making the products they came up with in English. They also needed to state the materials used in making the products.

Rumpelstiltskin - Drama for Form 2

Here's a video that I came across while browsing the net. It's a video of the drama Rumpelstiltskin, a drama which all form 2 students need to read and study.

Honestly, the video would come in very handy for anyone who are having troubles to understand the drama.

But even with the video, you need to finish reading the drama in order for you to get every little detail in the drama. Plus, it leads to better understanding.

Self-introduction

My name is actually Mohd Shafiq Mohd Zainol, but most of my friends call me Afiq. I am currently an English teacher, teaching at SMK Padang Terap. It has been 3 years I have been teaching there. It was my first school, as I was posted there on the 16 January 2012. Since then, I have learned a great deal of new things there, and here I would love to share some of it with the readers.

I did my Bachelor Degree of Education in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) at National University of Malaysia (UKM). I studied there for 2 years. Prior to that, I went to IPG Kampus Batu Lintang, in Kuching Sarawak. It was actually a 6-year twinning programme between UKM and IPG Kampus Batu Lintang. I graduated from UKM in 2011.

In 2014, I decided to further my study. I then applied for Master of Education specializing in ELT (English Language Teaching) in UUM. I got in, and now I am doing it part time. During the weekdays, I would go to school and teach as usual, while during the weekends, I would be attending classes.

Introduction

Hello there.

How do you do? First of all, I would love to thank all of you for visiting this site of mine, which I purposely created to help students, especially my students, to learn English.

It is commonly accepted belief that English is a difficult subject to master, and hence the lack of interest to learn the language among the students. Here, I would love to prove that English is actually EASY.

With the appropriate approaches and methods, it would be a piece of cake to learn the language.

WELCOME, WELCOME and WELCOME.
